Before setting out on any change, you have to consider the strategy that will be used to underpin the transition (Hersey and Blanchard, 1972). When push comes to shove, what rules will govern the decisions to be taken? This ethos will essentially be driven by two questions that the client will ask at some stage during the change:

  • How difficult will the change be?

  • How long will it take?

In responding, you need to agree what ethos will underpin the assignment. Will it be participative so that people have the freedom to decide their personal rate of adaptation? Or will it be coercive, where an authoritative source brings pressure ...
