How it works...

The default installation comes with five user roles of Administrator, Editor, Author, Contributor, and Subscriber. The Administrator has the highest capabilities and the Subscriber has the lowest. These user roles and default capabilities are stored in the wp_user_roles key in the wp_options table. This is a serialized value, as shown in the following screenshot:

As you can see, the capabilities section for each role contains the capability name and 1 as the value to define it as enabled. Now, we can look at how the three scenarios in the How to do it... section are handled by the plugin.
