How to do it...

Follow these steps to create and load a custom template for user profiles through a custom route:

1. Open the wpcookbookchapter7.php file using the code editor.
2. Add the following code at the end of the file to define a custom route using the WordPress Rewrite API:

add_action('init','wpccp_chapter7_manage_user_routes');function wpccp_chapter7_manage_user_routes(){  add_rewrite_rule( '^user-profile/([^/]+)/?', 'index.php?wpcpp_user_id=$matches[1]', 'top' );}// Step 3 code should be placed after this line

3. Add the following code after the code in step 2 to register a new query variable to handle the custom route:
