Just as each individual has a current and potential level of productivity, so does each branch, division, or department of an organization. This we call group productivity.
The next diagram illustrates this important concept. The beaker represents the productivity level and potential of the department as a whole.

You will observe that the productivity levels of Fred, Jane, and Art have been added to that of the supervisor. As you can see, the supervisor does not contribute as much in productivity (actually getting the work out) as do the individual employees. Why not?
