Promotion from Within
Promotion from within (PFW) is an old practice in many companies. That is, there is nothing new about PFW. It has always been the custom to move those who demonstrate that they are capable and responsible into higher positions when vacancies occur. If effective people are available, management usually wants to promote from within the company’s own ranks. A PFW policy encourages loyalty, provides some security, and has other advantages. It should be remembered, however, that even companies that have such a policy may make exceptions on their own or can be forced into adjustments because of layoffs and reorganizations.
