Almost all kinds of organizations—especially the smaller ones—have certain unpleasant tasks that must be done. Frequently, these tasks are handed to the newest employee. The new salesperson in a department store may be given excessive amounts of stock work at the start of her (or his) career. The factory worker may be given unpleasant cleanup jobs until another new member joins the department. The clerical employee may be given a dreaded filing assignment as a way to get totally acquainted with the new position.
