Finally, Gamma is Paul’s “safety school.” It’s a smaller, well-
managed company that would be delighted to have him; it’s
already made him an offer. Since it’s a smaller company, Paul
would be able to have an impact at Gamma far beyond the sales
function, and this could help position him for future general
management responsibility. This is assuming, however, that
Gamma’s owner doesn’t turn out to be a control freak, a prospect
about which Paul has some reason to worry. Also, the compen-
sation package on offer is substantially below what he is confi-
dent he could get from Beta or Alpha, and it’s unlikely he will
be able to get Gamma to sweeten it much.
