Unobserved but reported disrespectful behaviour

You have a team member who appears to respect you; however, others tell you this individual acts disrespectfully towards you when you aren’t there. The behaviour is affecting individuals and the team as a whole. This is particularly tricky because the behaviour isn’t directly observed but rather has been reported to you via third parties.

First, think:

  • Does this represent a change in this individual’s behaviour? If so, can you link the change to any other particular events or circumstances?
  • Is the disrespect restricted to you alone? Is it possible there is a valid reason for this disrespect, perhaps to do with the way you lead or your own personal integrity? Do you set an appropriate example ...
