Fear of allowing conflict in a team

It can come as a surprise when a previously high-performing team starts to decline. In some teams this can happen because of conflict (which may or may not be openly discussed). However, if as an individual you value harmony and avoid conflict, it may be even more difficult for you to help the team address any underlying issues.

First, think:

  • What is your definition of conflict? Does the team understand and share your definition?
  • Do you value harmony over debate? Would your team enjoy a more robust and open culture?
  • Have you had poor experiences in the past with conflict within teams? Is your approach to conflict similar in a professional and personal context?
