Limited access to stakeholders

One way to exert power and influence in the world of internal organisational politics is to make yourself relatively unavailable to people who see you as an important stakeholder in what they are doing. If someone is limiting your access to them, and you need that access to make progress or to check on decisions or plans you are developing, you will need some political agility to get yourself in front of your stakeholder.

First, think:

  • How often do other people at your level meet with this stakeholder? How does this compare to your access? Is their access both formal and informal? How does the stakeholder allocate access?
