An under-performing team

You lead a team which is under-performing. The team is measured by a number of metrics and is falling short on several of them. This reflects badly on you and you are experiencing pressure from above to act swiftly.

First, think:

  • How long has this been going on? Is the decline accelerating, slowing or being reversed?
  • How long have you been with the company? How well do you understand the way it works? Do you understand ‘the way things are done around here’? How long have you been leading the team? What is your management style? How experienced and confident are you at management and leadership? Is this your first failing team?
  • Are the metrics fair and appropriate? Does the team understand why and how they are measured? ...
