High performers who are high maintenance

You have a team member who is very good at what they do but demands a lot of attention. This individual may dominate meetings, demand a lot of one-on-one time, have pet projects or opinions which they frequently voice, or in some other way require a great deal of your time.

First, think:

  • The first thing to consider is what impact this behaviour is having on you. What about the team? Does it extend to internal or external stakeholders? Where and how do allowances have to be made? Is the individual worth the extra time?
  • Do you think you have any chance of changing these high-maintenance behaviours? How might the individual react if you challenge these behaviours?
