Personal turmoil

You have a team member who is going through significant personal turmoil, to the point where it is adversely affecting their professional performance. The individual appears distracted and disengaged. This in turn is affecting the team’s ability to act as a high-performing unit.

First, think:

  • How well do you know this person? How long have they been in your team?
  • How open is this person to you and to others in the team about their personal issues? Is this personal turmoil work-based or based outside work? How long has this been going on? Is there an end in sight?
  • Is the cause of the turmoil something that can be changed or something that cannot be changed? Does this individual need your protection, your support, your advice ...
