Organisational politics

Every organisation has politics; politics exist where there are two or more people working interdependently together. The choice isn’t whether you get involved or not. The choice is how you get involved. You can, however, decide to retain your integrity and play office politics wisely.

First, think:

  • How acceptable are individuals’ personal ambitions, hidden agendas and covert activities within your organisation?
  • What about you – do you think of politics as a dirty word? Or do you see the potential for politics to be a force for good? Do you relish playing politics or prefer just to observe?
  • What are your ambitions? How important are organisational politics to your achieving these ambitions?
