Approximately 90 percent of an employee’s workplace skills and knowledge are learned through on-the-job training (Carnevale and Gainer, 1989) in one of two ways: the degenerating buddy system, in which old habits, shortcuts, mistakes, confusion, and inconsistencies in task performance pass from one employee to another; or structured on-the-job training, a disciplined methodology that suffers from a lack of buy-in from the workers who use it and that often bears little resemblance to the way people “really” perform their jobs.
