TOM CHUAN SHI, Industrial Designer in China
Born in 1974, Tom Chuan Shi is a rising star in the Chinese creative community.
He earned his bachelor’s degree in industrial design at Guangzhou Academy of
Fine Arts, Guangzhou, China, in 1998. A student of Professor Tong, Shi worked in
Formstudio and designed consumer products for the Pearl River Delta Region en-
terprises until 2003. As an idealist, Shi was not satisfied with what he could accom-
plish, especially because design was not fully appreciated by local enterprises. He
left China to pursue a master’s degree of industrial design at Central Saint Martins
College of Art and Design in London. Working with two young Chinese designers,
WeiWei He and Jody Wenying Lu, Shi developed the witty design for the Dog Poo
Spray. The trio won the D&AD Student of the Year Award in 2005 and was listed in
Design Week’s “Hot 50 people making a difference in design 2005.”
After receiving his degree in 2005, Shi stayed in London working in product and
brand design, then returned to Guangzhou and established TomShi Studio in 2006.
With all the changes and new opportunities in China, Shi spends one-third of his
time working with clients on product design, one-third on the development of new
Chinese brands with friends, and one-third on experimental designs. He continues
to win awards, and his work has been featured in national and international journals
and exhibitions.
