The installer program for performing installations and upgrades for SQL Server 2012 is not much different from the installer provided with SQL Server 2008 R2, except for some minor changes and reorganization.
One key difference in SQL Server 2012 is that upgrading directly from versions prior to SQL Server 2005 SP4 is no longer supported. If you are upgrading from a prior version, you’ll first need to upgrade to one of the supported versions before upgrading to SQL Server 2012 or create a new database in SQL Server 2012 and migrate the data over, as described later in this chapter.
Also in SQL Server 2012, slipstream installations have essentially been replaced with the Product Update feature in the installation program. Product ...
