What’s New in Database Mail
The big news is that SQL Mail is discontinued in SQL Server 2012. You must use Database Mail to send notifications and other kinds of mail messages from SQL Server.
Database Mail is an enterprise-class implementation designed with all the features you’d expect from this next-generation database server, most of which are not available in SQL Mail. These features include support for multiple email profiles and accounts, asynchronous (queued) message delivery via a dedicated process in conjunction with Service Broker, cluster-awareness, 64-bit compatibility, greater security options (such as governing of mail attachment size and prohibition of file extensions), and simplified mail auditing.
