SQL Server 2012 supports upgrading from SQL Server 2005 SP4 and later versions. Upgrading directly from SQL Server 2000 or earlier versions is not supported. The only migration path available is to first migrate your SQL Server 2000 (or earlier) databases to a supported upgrade version, such as SQL Server 2005 SP4 or SQL Server 2008 SP2, and then upgrade from one of these versions to SQL Server 2012.
If you have a SQL Server 2005 SP4 instance available, the easiest way to upgrade your SQL Server 2000 or earlier databases is to detach them from the source server and then attach the databases to an instance running SQL Server 2005 SP4.
