Windows Management Instrumentation (WMI) is a Windows service that provides remote control and management. PowerShell provides some built-in support for retrieving information via WMI.
Although the main goal of WMI may be to provide remote access, it can also be used locally and can provide a wealth of information about a system. For example, WMI can be used to easily query disk space and installed patches. Examples of using WMI are shown later in this chapter.
