Appendix A. 100 Programs Worth Knowing About

On the CD-ROM with this book, you’ll find over 3,100 programs for the PalmPilot. All of this software comes from PalmCentral.com, the largest Palm-software web site on the Internet.

Accompanying all the software on the CD-ROM is a catalog program, called the PalmCentral CD Catalog, that lists, illustrates, describes, and even installs each of these programs onto your PalmPilot. If you’re hunting for, say, beekeeping software or a graphic that illustrates the third cervical vertebra, you should begin your quest by searching this program.

The purpose of this chapter is to bring about 100 of those programs to your attention—100 of the most useful, most important, or most unusual. Some of these, such as HackMaster, SwitchHack, and DateBk3, are worth installing immediately. The appeal of the others depends on you and your lifestyle.

But all of them serve as testimony to Palm Computing’s wisdom in making the PalmPilot an open, easy-to-program platform. You’ll note that the vast majority of the programs listed here and on the CD-ROM were written by individuals—and cost nothing or very little. That should show you something else, too: that the world of PalmPiloteers is a true community. That’s why the web home pages for each program are listed—and linked to—in the PalmCentral Catalog; true, some may go out of date or change, but at least you have a first resort when it comes to downloading newer versions of these programs or getting help with them. ...
