Defining News
When media were few in both number and delivery systems, news was defined by the editor or producer to meet target audience needs. The audience demographics of a television newscast on a major network directed a news program to focus on government, business, and breaking news such as airplane crashes or natural disasters. That demographic was made up primarily of middle- to upper-class viewers, with middle- to upper-class income and education.
The advent of newer technologies not only ripped those demographics to shreds, it also redefined them, and at the same time created new and additional media to target new demographics.
In short, news has come to be defined by the recipient to mean whatever he or she wants it to be.
