FTP (File Transfer Protocol)

File Transfer Protocol, often referred to as FTP, is a protocol used for transferring files across the Internet. You are already familiar with another protocol called Hypertext Transfer Protocol, or HTTP.

We recommend using FileZilla if you don’t already have an FTP client. It is free and works on Windows, Mac OS X, and Linux.

When you open up your FTP client, you will need to enter three pieces of information:

Host/Site

This tells your FTP client where to find your server. Typically this is your domain name without the http://www. An example might be <yourdomain>.com or ftp.<yourdomain>.com.

Username

This tells your FTP client what login to use when connecting to your server. This is typically the same as your cPanel login.

Password

This tells your FTP client what password to use when connecting to your server. This is typically the same as your cPanel password.

Once logged in, you should a screen similar to Figure A-5. There are many files and folders, but we are only going to concern ourselves with one of them. The public_html folder is where all of your website files will go. When you go to a website, it looks for files in that folder to load. On some servers this folder may not exist. If it does not exist on your server, then look for www, httpdocs, or htdocs. If none of those folders exist, contact your host to find out which folder you should put your website files in.
