
To pull this off, choose Edit→Copy or press Ctrl+C (-C). Then
choose Paste in Back or press Ctrl+B (-B). Although your art-
work won’t look any different, this step results in a collection
of selected instances that stand ready to receive another sym-
bol. (Be careful where you click, by the way. You don’t want to
deselect your artwork at this point!)
25. Select an alternate symbol from the control panel. Here’s an-
other way to replace one or more selected instances with a dif-
ferent symbol: Go up to the control panel and click the pop-up
menu to the right of the word Replace. Expand the panel and
scroll to the bottom of the symbols list. Then select the wing
art called Regal Vector Pack 14. Illustrator replaces the back-
ground lions immediately.
26. Assign a red fi ll to the wings. The black lions are altogether
unreadable against the black wings. So let’s make the wings
red. Click the second icon, , at the bottom of the Appearance
panel or press Ctrl+ (- ) to add a new fi ll. Then click the
Fill swatch in the panel to bring up a list of swatches. Select the
second red swatch, Ruby, to fi ll the wings with red.
27. Scale the wings by 150 percent. The wings need to be much
larger and scooted out a bit. I found a combination of two resiz-
ing operations worked best. First, choose Object→Transform→
Transform Each or press Ctrl+Shift+Alt+D (-Shift-Option-D).
