22. Select all paths with a plain black stroke. Switch to the magic
wand tool by selecting it from the toolbox (or pressing the Y key).
Before you can use the tool to select objects, however, you need
to make some adjustments. Choose WindowMagic Wand to
bring up the Magic Wand panel as shown in Figure 5-71. Alterna-
tively, you can double-click the magic wand tool in the toolbox.
If your window doesn’t match that shown in the fi gure, make sure to
choose Show Stroke Options and Show Transparency Options from the
panel (
) menu.
In the panel, deselect Fill Color and select the Stroke Color
option. Now click any one of the eyelashes. Note that all the
black paths are now selected—but so are the shapes that make
up the speech bubble, which clearly do not have a black stroke.

compound shapes—while the compound shape itself has a non-
black stroke, the individual elements that make up the shape do
have black strokes, and Illustrator is trying to do its best with
the information it’s given. Switch to the black arrow tool, and
while pressing the Shift key, marquee as shown in Figure 5-72 to
remove the extraneous shapes from the selection. (Be careful
not to accidentally marquee the text.)
23.
Assign the black swatch and make it global. Bring up the
Swatches panel, and make sure the Stroke attribute is active.
