26. Convert the shoe lines to paths. Select the fi ve grill lines over
the left shoe, as in Figure 6-56, and group them. To crop them,
we need to convert them to paths as we did all the way back in
Step 2 on page 193; choose ObjectPathOutline Stroke.

Copy the shoe outline to the front. Select the shoe outline, and
copy it by pressing Ctrl+C (-C). Deselect the artwork by click-
ing off the shoe outline, and then paste the shoe in the front by
pressing Ctrl+F (-F).
You must deselect the artwork before pasting; otherwise, you will paste
directly in front of the selected object, which in this case is still behind
the grill lines. When in doubt, select the object you would like to paste
in front of before choosing Paste in Front.

Crop the lines to the shoe outline. The shoe outline should still
be selected; Shift-click the lines to add them to the selection.
Click the
icon to crop the lines to the shoe.
29. Repeat for the other shoe. Repeat Steps 26 through 28 for the
other shoe. Your results should match those in Figure 6-57.

Create a compound path from the links in the chain. Select all
the links in the chain by marqueeing as shown in Figure 6-58,
Shift-marqueeing to select the last two links. Alt-click (or Op-
tion-click) the
icon in the Pathfi nder panel to create a com-
pound path from the links. Note that as part of a compound
path, each link can stil
