comes the caveat. If you enter 5 29/32in, you will be greeted

you with an “Invalid numeric value” alert. Illustrator can’t deal

with whole numbers and fractions together in a numeric fi eld.

(Illustrator doesn’t even consider them fractions, but rather

numbers separated by a division sign.) 5+29/32in also won’t

work because Illustrator limits you to one operand per fi eld.

Here’s the workaround: First, make sure the Constrain Propor-

tion box is not checked. Then, enter the fraction value “29/32in”

in the Width fi eld, tab to the next fi eld (prompting Illustrator

to convert the value to 65.25pt), Shift+Tab back to the Width

fi eld, and then append “+5in” to the value, so that the box reads

“65.25 pt +5in”. When you tab to the Height value, Illustrator

dutifully does the math, for a fi nal width of 425.25 points. For

the Height value, enter “4.675in” (the equivalent of 4

inches),

and then click OK to accept the artboard’s new size.

Reposition the second artboard. You should still be in artboard-

editing mode. Click and hold somewhere in the second art-

board; you can now drag it to any position in the document.

Drag the artboard to the right, leaving enough room so that the

crop marks don’t overlap (or barely overlap) into the bleed of

the fi rst artboard. Finally, align the vertical centers of the art-

board. Illustrator will snap it into place and draw a green smart

guide connect ...
