To end up with only the overlapped portions of two selections, click on the fourth icon on the far left of the options bar (it looks like two squares intersecting, with the overlap area colored in), or hold down Shift-Option (Mac) or Shift-Alt (Windows) while editing an existing selection. Sometimes I use the Magic Wand tool to select the background of an image and then choose Select > Inverse to get the objects of the selected image (Figure 2.50). However, when there are multiple objects in the image, as there are in Figures 2.51 and 2.52, I often have to restrict the selection to a specific area by dragging with the Lasso tool while holding down Shift-Option (Mac) or Shift-Alt (Windows).
