If you have a Layer Style (like Bevel and Emboss) applied to a layer that contains a Layer Mask, you'll find that the mask changes where the style shows up (Figures 15.81 and 15.82). If you'd rather have the Layer Mask hide the style instead of changing where it shows up, hold Option (Mac) or Alt (Windows) and double-click on the layer to access the Layer Style dialog box. Turning on the Layer Mask Hides Effects check box will cause the Layer Mask to hide the original style position instead of changing where it shows up (Figures 15.83 and 15.84).
