Step 8—Local Tonal Adjustments

With the image relatively noise-free, we can start to isolate particular areas and fine-tune the brightness and contrast of objects (Figures 17.30 and 17.31). This is when I'll isolate an area by making a selection and use Curves to do its magic on any areas that I was unable to fix when I performed the global tonal adjustment. It might be to brighten someone's face that was in the shade, or to darken a background to make it less distracting. The range of possibilities is truly endless and each person will have a different vision for what the image should look like, so there is no pre-set method for choosing areas that should be adjusted.
