If there is a selection present when you're pasting an image into your document, you can choose Edit > Paste Into (instead of Edit > Paste) to automatically create a Layer Mask. This Layer Mask will make the image show up only in the area that was selected. You can also hold down the Option key (Mac) or Alt key (Windows) and choose Edit > Paste Into to hide the selected areas. If you choose Select > All before choosing Paste Into, Photoshop will create a Layer Mask and reveal the entire image. You can also hold down the Option key (Mac) or Alt key (Windows) and choose Paste Into to hide the entire image.
