When your image contains more than just solid black and solid white pixels, then the resolution of your image shouldn't be a 1:1 relationship to the resolution of your printer. For instance, you can have up to 256 shades of gray in a normal grayscale image. But when you print that grayscale image, most printers are limited to using dots of solid black ink. Different printer types use different methods for simulating shades of gray out of those solid black dots.
