Because Photoshop treats Layer Masks as if they are grayscale documents, you can create selections and fill those areas with black or white to hide or show the contents of a layer. To fill a selected area with the current foreground color (which is black by default), press Option-Delete (Mac) or Alt-Backspace (Windows). To fill a selected area with the current background color (white by default), press Command-Delete (Mac) or Ctrl-Backspace (Windows). This is nice because it frees you from having to use the painting tools.
