Layers

If you are using layers in your document, the Healing Brush tool will work on one layer at a time, unless you turn on the Sample All Layers check box located on the options bar. With this option turned on, Photoshop will act as if your document has no layers at all. In other words, it will be able to take from any layer that is below your cursor, as if they were all combined. However, it will apply, or deposit, the information you are healing only onto the currently active layer. That way, you can create a new empty layer, turn on the Sample All Layers check box, and retouch your image (Figure 16.25).
