Frame rate is key to performance

Each device has its own target frame rate, which has been thoroughly researched for the best performance. Most video games play at 30 frames per second, 30 fps for VR creates a visual lag, which causes discomfort and induces simulation sickness (see Combating sickness in Chapter 7, Carnival MidwayGames Part 1, for a detailed explanation on motion and simulation sickness). To avoid this problem, be sure your target device can display at least 60 fps.  Listed here are the frame rates for some popular devices:

  • Device frame rates
  • iPhone 4, Samsung Galaxy 5S: 30 fps
  • Google Daydream: 50 fps
  • Samsung Gear VR (and most mobile devices): 60 fps
  • Oculus Rift and HTC Vive: 75-90 fps
