Using planes

Planes are single-sided 3D objects which can be colored with materials or textured with Sprites. Being single-sided means that rendering resources are not used to represent the other side of the object. When used in the background or on distant objects we can create the appearance of 3D details by using 2D shapes. This is another method for reducing unnecessary geometry.
