Although there are dozens of graphic file formats out there in the world, only three are supported by web browsers for use on web pages: GIF (pronounced “jif”), JPEG (“jay-peg”), and PNG (“ping”). These formats were selected for use on the Web by browser creators because they are easily ported from platform to platform over a network.
What follows is a brief introduction to each of these online graphic formats. More detailed descriptions are provided in the upcoming chapters dedicated to each format.
