Windows 98 also characterizes fonts by their intended output device: the screen or the printer:
Screen fonts are designed to represent characters on a display screen only.
Printer fonts are used by the printer to generate the characters that will appear on the printed page. Windows 98 can work with three kinds of printer fonts:
Device fonts, which are generated by the printer hardware
Downloadable soft fonts, which are sent to the printer during a print job
Printable screen fonts, which can be rendered both onscreen and on the printer
