This chapter showed you a few techniques for working with the DOS shell. You learned various methods for starting DOS sessions and running commands. At the DOS prompt, I showed you how to work with long filenames, start programs (including Windows applications), undelete files, and customize the DOS screen. I also showed you how to optimize DOS applications under Windows 98. After some introductory remarks about PIFs, I showed you how to set up a DOS program to run in MS-DOS mode. Then you learned how to really leverage MS-DOS mode by creating custom CONFIG.SYS and AUTOEXEC.BAT files for each program. I then took you through a conventional memory optimization session.
