Font Limitations

When you install a font, Windows 98 adds that font to the GDI and to the following Registry key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Fonts

Unfortunately, this puts certain restrictions on how many fonts you can install:

  • The GDI reserves about 10KB for font filenames. This means that if font filenames average about 10 characters (including the period and extension), you won't be able to add any more than about 1,000 fonts to the GDI.

  • The Fonts subkey in the Registry stores both the font name and the font filename. Unfortunately, Registry keys are limited to 64KB. This means that if your fonts average 40 or 45 characters for their names and 10 characters for their filenames, you won't be able to cram much ...
