
A Prototypical New Manager Program
Considering how the new managers learned their roles and iden-
tities and the resources upon which they relied, the ideal man-
agement development program should be designed as an ap-
prenticeship. Apprenticeships work best when individualized.
Novices come to their craft with unique strengths and weaknesses
or gaps in development. Like other artisans, new managers ac-
quire their craft principally with actual and vicarious experiences
and coaching by other craftspeople. In a perfect world, develop-
