revising them; they are continually scanning the environment to
anticipate what the organization will need and hence what
knowledge and skills they should strive to develop. Instead of
engaging in self-serving behavior focused primarily on achiev-
ing their personal ambitions, they are willing to take the risks
necessary to seek out the kinds of assignments from which they
can learn and thereby be in a position to contribute to corpo-
rate objectives. One manager described a critical lesson learned
