xvi Why We Wrote This Book
There I collaborated with management experts, many on the
Harvard faculty, to produce programs about how to manage. If
Sterling was the prelude to my management career, this was the
coda. It was an opportunity to refl ect on my experience in relation
to the content of the programs I was producing and fi nally make
sense of what had worked, and where and why I had fallen short.
What I learned is the heart of my contribution to Being the Boss .
While at Harvard, I came across Linda’s work with new managers
and read it with deep and personal interest. It played a large role
in helping me understand my own experience.
