The new extension model is the new way to develop applications for Microsoft Dynamics NAV or Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central for on-premise and cloud, based on extensions. For Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central SaaS, it is the only one development method possible.

According to Microsoft, an extension is an installable feature for Microsoft Dynamics NAV and Dynamics 365 Business Central built in a way that doesn't directly alter source resources and is distributed as a preconfigured package.
