3.3 Data mining techniques
As we explained previously, a variety of techniques have been developed over
the years to explore for and extract information from large data sets. When the
name data mining was coined, many of these techniques were simply grouped
together under this general heading and this has led to some confusion about
what data mining is all about. In this section we try to clarify some of the
confusion.
3.3.1 Types of techniques
In general, data mining techniques can be divided into two broad categories:
