BIND and the Active Directory
Although Active Directory does require DNS to function properly, it does not require a Windows 2000 DNS. Windows 2000 DNS is the best DNS for the AD because of its ease of use, scalability, and integration with WINS and the Active Directory through AD integrated zones. However, DNS servers exist for virtually every operating system available. DNS runs on Linux, UNIX, NT, and NetWare. Some of these support Active Directory, and some do not. Windows 2000 DNS, however, is specifically designed to support not only the usual task that every DNS server performs—hostname resolution—but also the very important task of providing name resolution for Active Directory.
