Contacts are unique objects in that they do not serve a distinct purpose without Exchange 2000. These objects cannot be assigned permissions, although they can be members of a group.

With Exchange 2000, the contact object takes on a whole new role. For those familiar with Exchange prior to Exchange 2000, a custom recipient was an object in the Exchange directory that represented an outside email address. For example, as a consultant, I want my contact information to be readily available to my clients.
