A group policy object is really made up of two things, a group policy container and a group policy template. The container is stored in the Active Directory and is identified by a globally unique identifier (GUID). The template is a collection of filesystem objects that are stored in the sysvol share on every Domain Controller. It is also identified by a GUID. The GUID is used to keep the two parts of the group policy object synchronized.
