It's worth its weight in gold, in terms of what it allows me to do.
Summary
In the best of all possible worlds, you will never have to manually care for Active Directory database files. However, you can use the ntdsutil tool to check, repair, and move these files. Additionally, a good knowledge of the files will assist you in troubleshooting Active Directory and performance tuning.
