Domain name services can be complex to install, maintain, and troubleshoot. It is a distributed database that can be updated, under some circumstances, virtually anywhere by virtually anyone. It is absolutely critical in maintaining the proper functioning of the Active Directory. Because the original RFCs were written in 1984, it has been around—in some form—longer than most tools in use today. It is well documented in the Online Books, in the Resource Kit, and freely on the Web.
